The Benaki Museum was founded in Athens, Greece by Antonis Benakis, a patriot, a cosmopolitan and a visionary collector, born in Alexandria, Egypt. Since its inauguration, in April 1931, it has evolved into one of the largest and most innovative museums in Europe, with collections of Greek, Islamic, Chinese, African and American art, with 9 annexes, 4 archives, 7 conservation laboratories and 5 shops. Diverse cultures from all historical periods meet contemporary art movements across a network of venues all over Athens -and beyond. The Benaki Museum remains welcoming, open to all and faithful to its mission: the creation of a diverse space, where cultures, eras and places meet.
